The Online Model
FUNCTIONALITY
An online model is ideal for campuses that are looking for an enterprise wide campus cash card solution that will be accepted at most retail and food service locations, as well as at self service unattended point of sales locations like vending, laundry, print and copy. The primary justification for an online model is the ease of generating financial reports for settlement.
In an online model, cash or unit value is stored in the back end data base. A key benefit of this model is the card is authenticated before every transaction to determine if it is valid or not. All terminals are "online", or connected to a network, and securely communicate to the back end database. When a card is reported lost or stolen, it is disabled from future use and a new card is issued. For additional security, the cash card account can be protected with a PIN just like your ATM card.
Online settlement is more of a reporting function since all transactions are recorded real time in the back end database. Reports are hierarchical in structure, allowing reports to be summarized by date, time, card number, terminal number, terminal groups etc. The ability to report on accumulated transaction data in real-time is the primary benefit of an online system. Reports can be be ran at any time with up to the minute accuracy.
